AIRBORNE! Ken Miles driving the 1965 Shelby GT350R “Flying Mustang” at Green Valley Raceway

February 14, 1965, and it was the first time a GT350 Competition, more commonly known as the GT350R, was entered into a sanctioned race, an SCCA event at Green Valley Raceway. Ken Miles was the driver and won the race, proving the capability of the GT350R in the process. He also got the car airborne—all four wheels in the air—which earned the nickname "Flying Mustang".

The car was also raced by Carroll Shelby. It was the second of all GT350s built by Shelby. I approached the design of this painting from a perspective where no photo exists, and one that amplifies the actual drama at Green Valley.

My appreciation to Carroll Shelby Licensing® who offered me special access to their photo archives through my license to create Shelby-branded artwork. The views of the shop that they provided were a great help in creating the setting for this piece. This is my source material that I combined to recreate a moment. To my knowledge, there is no existing photograph of this moment from this angle.

Along with the original painting, there are also hand-embellished prints available. These are special prints because I go back into the print with acrylic paint and completely repaint the car, any figures, and some background imagery as well.
